5 Essential Tools for the Weekend Warrior

By Mandi Gubler

Hey guys!!

Mandi here and I am especially excited because today we’re talking all about one of my favorite topics, tools!! More specifically tools that every DIYer must have in their arsenal. This isn’t your basic hammer/screw driver list, you guys know that you need a hammer. These are the power tools that are essential to your DIY livelihood. Ready to dive in?

#1 Level

Ok I know that I just said power tools and a level isn’t a power tool. Also this may seem a little eye rolling obvious but believe me when I say that it is THE MOST IMPORTANT tool in your life. You can have all the latest and greatest tools but without a way to install your project and make it look good, its going to look amateur at best.

I recommend: Black & Decker 36-Inch Gecko Grip Level with Accu Mark

#2 Drill and Impact Driver set

I use this more than any other tool, hands down. I love the Impact Driver because its light weight and powerful. Something to pay attention to when you’re buying one is if the tool is Brushless, this newer tech is great at saving you battery life, it’s more powerful, and the life of your tool is greatly extended.

I recommend: DeWalt MAX XR Lithium Ion Brushless Compact Drill/Driver & Impact Driver Combo Kit, 20V

#3 Compound Miter Saw

A miter saw is a tool that lets you make cuts at a variety of angles. You can rotate the saw on its base and also rotate the angle of the blade. The name compound comes from being able to cut 2 angles at the same time. You don’t have to have a massive miter saw with an articulating arm and 9000 horsepower. This is not a Tim Taylor grunting “More POWER!” moment, especially if you’re more of a DIYer and not a professional framer. There are inexpensive miter saws that are light weight and will cut 95% of your projects juuuuust fine.

I recommend: Ryobi 10″ Compound Miter Saw

#4 Cordless Finish Nailer

One of the greatest tool advancements is the invention of a cordless finish nailer. Using a finish nailer before would have also involved hauling around an air compressor, extension cords, and ear plugs, not to mention the actual tool. Cordless finish nailers are all of those things in one and they are AMAZING. I would recommend going with a higher end brand (Rigid or Dewalt).

I recommend: Rigid HYPERDRIVE 18-Volt 18-Gauge 2-1/8 in. Brushless Brad Nailer

#5 Orbital Sander

Refinishing furniture is all fun and games until you give yourself carpal tunnel. Having an orbital sander is an absolute necessity. Spend a little more and get one with more power, its worth it!!

I recommend: DEWALT Random Orbit Sander Kit, 5″

What else would you add to my recommendations?
